KEN ANNANDALE

CEO: INTRA-SAFE (PTY) LTD

Ken Annandale is the CEO and founder of INTRA-SAFE, and has been actively involved in occupational health and safety training for more than 20 years. During his career, Ken has also fulfilled numerous roles, including drug-squad policeman, audiometrist, naval officer, NOSA consultant, radio announcer, university lecturer (in group communications skills), team-building leader, scuba diving master and licenced firewalker facilitator. He has authored two bestsellers, Movers, Shakers, Moaners & Groaners and Professional Presentation Skills, is the co-recipient of the Toastmasters International Communication and Leadership Award, and has appeared on national television on a number of occasions.

DR DEONIE BOTHA

HEAD OF INNOVATION: NOSA (PTY) LTD

Dr Deonie Botha currently holds a doctorate, two master’s degrees and has completed several diplomas. She is presently enrolled for an MSc in Mining Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand. She has qualifications in knowledge management, information science, information technology (IT), strategic analysis, decision making, competitive intelligence, change management and human resources management (HRM).

Deonie joined NOSA in August 2014 as Head of Innovation. She is responsible for the Research and Development Department (R&D) at NOSA (the team responsible for developing new products and services, and improving existing products within the field of occupational health, safety and environment, as well as risk management). Her role includes, but is not limited to, the mining, engineering, construction, and food and beverage industries. Deonie has been exposed to managing research and development capabilities for various mining companies, equipping her with a broad knowledge of its various technical aspects. She was responsible for knowledge management and technology intelligence at Anglo American, where in 2009, she was tasked with creating a knowledge management and technology intelligence capability.

She was also responsible for liaising with local (RIIS) and international stakeholders (NineSigma) to provide an open innovation service to Anglo American’s technical community, and involved in initiating change management initiatives according to the Rapid Results Methodology. During her time at Anglo American, she was also responsible for knowledge management, and market intelligence and research at Kumba Iron Ore, a subsidiary of Anglo American.

Deonie has both practical experience and in-depth theoretical knowledge regarding knowledge management and competitive intelligence. She has lectured extensively on both these subject areas for many years, at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition to her current role, she lectures part-time at a business school and authors study guides for academic institutions.

DR CANDICE CHRISTIE

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR AND HEAD OF DEPARTMENT: HUMAN KINETICS AND ERGONOMICS UNIT, RHODES UNIVERSITY

Professor Candice Christie is the Head of Department: Human Kinetics and Ergonomics at Rhodes University. She completed her undergraduate degree in Human Movement Studies at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and her BSc (Med)(Hons) Exercise Science (Biokinetics) from the University of Cape Town. She then worked for a number of years at the Sports Science Institute of South Africa, before moving to Rhodes University in 1999. Here she obtained her MSc and PhD degrees, as well as a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education. She is a National Research Foundation (NRF)-rated scientist and has attracted funding through the NRF’s Competitive Fund for Rated Researchers, the Medical Research Council of South Africa and Rhodes University. Her research interests are specifically related to exercise interventions for cardiovascular health promotion in female populations, health and work, and understanding fatigue mechanisms in intermittent sports (such as cricket). She has over 40 articles in peer-reviewed publications and regularly presents at both national and international conferences.

GEORGE COETZEE

VICE PRESIDENT HEAD OF GROUP SAFETY: ANGLOGOLD ASHANTI

George is an experienced senior health and safety professional, with thirty years’ mining industry experience, and holds a number of related occupational safety, risk management, occupational hygiene and environmental management qualifications. These include a National Diploma in Safety Management, a BTech in Safety Management and a Senior Management Development qualification. He is also a Registered Occupational Safety Professional with the Institute of Safety Management (IOSM). In his current role he leads the Group's safety activities for 17 mines, in nine countries across the African, Australian and South American continents.

MARY CREWE

DIRECTOR: CENTRE FOR SEXUALITIES, AIDS AND GENDER UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA

Mary Crewe is currently the Director of the Centre for Sexualities, AIDS and Gender, based at the University of Pretoria. She has worked in the field of HIV/AIDS since 1989, working in the greater Johannesburg Municipality, and the National Departments of Health and Education. She was involved in the drafting of the 1994 National AIDS Plan and has worked extensively with various UN agencies, international agencies and the SADC Parliamentary Forum. She is the author of a book and many articles on HIV/AIDS in South Africa, has delivered key plenary addresses and other papers at HIV/AIDS conferences, and was the co-chair of both the 2015 South African AIDS conference and the ASSHH conference. She works in social response to HIV and AIDS, and in the issues of human rights, sexualities, gender and social identity. Her current work is developing a transformation programme at the University of Pretoria through the Imagined Futures and Agents for Change Programme, working to equip young people and the communities from which they are drawn to ask critical questions about change and future leadership, democracy and accountability.

JOHN DREBINGER

PRESIDENT: JOHN DREBINGER PRESENTATIONS

Acclaimed international safety speaker and author, John Drebinger has been delivering dynamic safety presentations worldwide for over 26 years, and is known for injecting humour and magic to engage audiences. Creator of the technique and book, Would You Watch Out For My Safety?, his strategies create a culture where people take action to protect themselves, as well as those around them.

SANDIE GILBERT

DIRECTOR: ELEARNING JOHN DREBINGER PRESENTATIONS

Sandie Gilbert, a skilled facilitator, elicits techniques from the audience, which they immediately put to use. She works with John Drebinger, carrying out an exercise in which participants develop a personal action plan they can implement to improve their safety performance.

DR KATHY GRUVER

AUTHOR, SPEAKER, EDUCATOR: CORPORATE STRESS PROGRAMS

Kathy Gruver hosted the national TV show based on her first book, The Alternative Medicine Cabinet. She has earned her PhD in Natural Health and has authored five award-winning books including, Conquer Your Stress and Journey of Healing. She has studied mind/body medicine at the famed Benson-Henry Institute for Mind-Body Medicine at Harvard, and has been featured as an expert in numerous publications including Glamour, Fitness, Time, WebMD, Prevention, The Huffington Post and Dr Oz’s The Good Life. She has also made numerous appearances as a guest expert on over 250 radio and TV shows, and done over 200 educational lectures around the world.

JOHANN HAVENGA

CEO: SUPPLIER RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT

Johann has a background in strategy, innovation and business development. As former executive of a listed multi-national company, he was responsible for the creation and management of Group Strategy and the implementation of multi-billion rand business development initiatives. He has taught these topics part-time as certificate and post-graduate subjects at the University of Pretoria and GIBS. For the last number of years he has been involved in consulting for a multi-national mining group, with a specific focus on issues related to technology development, and the identification and integration of existing and emerging technology.

Supplier Relationship Management (SRM) has partnered with multi-skilled, global specialists in the critical areas required to offer an integrated ‘wearable’ solution. SRM believes that an integrated approach to wearable technology is required. We are technology agnostic and believe that the devices and technology will change over time. SRM’s approach is to become the service integrator partner to find a suitable wearable or device to track the desired outcome. Management of the data remains key. As the technology improves it may be possible to measure more biometric areas, switch the data faster and draw more valuable conclusions from the process.

DR EUGENE KEMP

EKAYCONSULT

Dr Kemp is a registered psychologist with a doctorate in neuro-linguistics, a neuro-technology programme used for changing mind sets, attitudes, habits, and improving understanding of what makes people tick. His focus is on equipping executives and leaders, and is very involved in culture transformation programmes. For the last three years, he has been involved with the Eskom Top 100 Executive Leadership Program and the Corporate Culture Transformation Programme at Denel.

He has a passion for creating and maintaining safe spaces through a better understanding of the human factor, and has developed a comprehensive safety programme with the University of Stellenbosch Business School-Ed, aligned to the industry’s guidelines and is fully integrated with leadership and cultural transformation programmes in creating healthy and abundant organisations.

OLIVER LALOUX

CEO: MONDIAL CONSULTANTS (PTY) LTD

Oliver has over 20 years’ experience in various aspects of Governance, Risk and Compliance (GRC), specialising in risk-based governance, risk and compliance solutions, business continuity management/business resilience, as well as enterprise risk management, project risk management and the integration of sometimes disparate operational or health, safety, environmental and quality (HSEQ) management processes into a truly organisation-wide ERM or IRM framework.

With international experience spanning Africa, Australasia, Russia, continental Europe, Canada, and South America, Oliver has been fortunate to experience GRC across many sectors, public and private organisations, from small enterprises to large multi-national corporates. With his technical and social education and background, he provides risk process and risk content expertise and thought leadership at various forums, ranging from tertiary institutions to boards, municipal councils, executive committees and risk/audit committees.

Skilled at the development and implementation of innovative, sometimes complex solutions, Oliver has gained high facilitation, collaboration, execution and diplomatic skills to ensure the success of his advisory initiatives. He has acted both as a member of and lead for over 350 consulting projects, specialist Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) projects, GRC gap analyses, project governance assignments, risk management training strategies, board and board sub-committee awareness projects, project risk assignments, quantitative risk assessments and risk-based due diligence investigations, both in South Africa and abroad. He also serves on a number of technical and advisory committees at national and industry levels.

LAURA MALLABONE

DIRECTOR: SATARLA

Laura Mallabone has an MSc in Chemical Engineering and an MBA. Laura has 18 years of risk management experience, both in industry and as a consultant. Laura is a co-founder of a boutique consultancy – Satarla – specialising in risk advisory services. Prior to this, Laura held various risk roles, including business risk manager at a multi-national mining company, with her most recent role that of Global Head of Sustainability Risk (where she played a key role in driving the sustainability agenda). Laura is a registered facilitator and has designed and facilitated a number of courses on behalf of IRMSA. She is also a member of IRMSA’s Education and Technical Committee, and has been instrumental in the drive towards professionalisation of risk management. Laura is a member of TC262 – reviewing the ISO 3100 Risk Management Standard.

LEIGH McMASTER

SPECIALIST BEHAVIOURAL CHANGE: CHAMBER OF MINES

Leigh McMaster holds BCom and BCom (Hons) degrees in HR and Industrial Psychology respectively, and is currently completing his MSc Mining Engineering through Wits. He is also a registered Chartered HR professional in HSE with the SABPP. Leigh has been working as a safety, health and sustainable development professional for the last nine years. Leigh has experience working in the trade union environment, in employer organisations, and is currently employed as the specialist for behavioural change at the Chamber of Mines, where he is able to continue his passionate work around behavioural safety and stakeholder engagement in the mining industry.

BRANDON MUNRO

CEO: BANNERMAN RESOURCES LTD

Brandon Munro has degrees in economics and law, and post graduate qualifications in finance and corporate governance. Brandon is an Australian mining executive, company director, and former mergers and acquisitions (M&A) lawyer. He is Chief Executive Officer of Bannerman Resources Limited, an ASX-listed company focused on developing the £200 million Etango uranium project near Swakopmund, Namibia. Brandon served as Governance Advisor to the Namibian Uranium Association and is Strategic Advisor – Mining Charter to the Namibian Chamber of Mines. He is a trustee of Save the Rhino Trust Namibia and a non-executive director of ASX-listed technology companies Rewardle Holdings Ltd and Novatti Group Ltd. He passionately endorses corporate social investment and is regarded as a thought leader in community engagement. He has spoken on corporate social responsibility (CSR) topics at various conferences in Australia and Africa.

Brandon lives in Perth, having recently returned to Australia after spending five years living in Namibia with his wife and two daughters.

PROFESSOR PIET NAUDE

DIRECTOR: UNIVERSITY OF STELLENBOSCH BUSINESS SCHOOL

Piet Naudé holds an MA in Philosophy (cum laude) and a PhD in Theology from the University of Stellenbosch. He is a Professor of Ethics and former Vice-Rector: Academic at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth. In September 2014, he was appointed as Director of the Stellenbosch University Business School (USB).

He has received a number of national and international academic awards, including an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation scholarship to the Universities of Heidelberg and Bamberg (Germany), and life membership of the Centre for Theological Enquiry at Princeton University (USA). Between January 2012 and August 2014 he held a position of Extraordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University’s theological faculty.

Piet is a rated scientist by the National Research Foundation of South Africa and has published over 90 articles in accredited journals and presented more than 100 papers at national and international conferences. His monograph on the Belhar confession was awarded the Andrew Murray–Desmond Tutu prize for theological-academic literature in 2011.

Piet is the past President of the Business Ethics Network of Africa (BEN-Africa) and also the African representative on the executive committee of the International Society for Business, Ethics and Economics (ISBEE). Piet was appointed as a Trustee of the Wilderness Foundation Africa in 2015. He was also appointed to the EFMD Dean’s Steering Committee in 2016.

He regularly speaks at business and civil society conferences and has done consulting work for national and international listed companies on issues of ethics and governance.

Piet has been writing a weekly column for The Eastern Province Herald for the last nine years. In 2011 he won the national Vodacom Journalist of the Year competition for his work as a columnist. Times Media published a collection of these columns entitled, Reading between the (head) lines, in October 2014. He is married to Elize Roodt, an academic, and the couple has three children.

GARY RALPH

ASSOCIATE PARTNER – MINING LEAD: IBM BUSINESS CONSULTING SERVICES SOUTH AFRICA

Gary started in the mining industry in 1988 as a Learner Official, mining at Anglo American Gold and Uranium Division’s Elandsrand Gold Mine. Over a period of 10 years, Gary fulfilled various production roles before being transferred to Graphic Mining Solutions (GMSI). Gary spent the next eight years growing with the company, by taking on various roles. In April 2006, he decided to try his hand at mining consulting and joined Sound Mining Solutions as a Senior Mining Engineer. In 2007 Gary re-joined Anglo American as Principal Mining Engineer, Group Mining and remained there until 2014. He once again worked as a consultant to the industry until joining IBM in October 2015 as the Mining Lead in IBM’s Global Business Services, South Africa, where he leads the mining business.

WERNER SCHIERSCHMIDT

SHEQ MANAGER: AIRBUS DS OPTRONICS (PTY) LTD

Werner started his career as an aircraft electrician, maintaining aircraft for the South African Air Force. In 1983 he decided to join the Quality Fraternity and obtained his City & Guilds of London Institute. After adding HSE to his portfolio he underwent extensive training in Human Factors and Safety Management in the UK.

Werner has been working for a number of aerospace and defence companies and was fundamental in obtaining various international certifications for his current company. He provides training in human factors and SMS, and his company has successfully implemented an integrated SMS, satisfying the requirements of the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO).

DR BRETT SOLOMON

CEO: THE KINETIC LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Dr Brett Solomon has been involved in numerous safety culture change initiatives with prestigious mining companies Anglo American, Glencore Alloys, Aveng Moolmans, BHP Billiton and Impala Platinum. He has recently been involved in projects with Queensland Aluminium, Sydney Trains and Glencore’s Rolleston Coal Mine in Australia, and is currently doing work with Chemanol Petrochemical and NOMAC’s power plants in Saudi Arabia, as well as the Dominion Diamond in Canada. Dr Solomon is a regular speaker at the African OHS Conference and writer for SHEQ Management and ASSE’s Safety Professional.

TERESA STEELE-SCHOBER

DIRECTOR: UVUNA SUSTAINABILITY (PTY) LTD

Teresa Steele-Schober holds a BSc (Hons) in Geology and a Masters in Environmental Management. She has worked extensively in the mining industry as an environmental and sustainability professional. She has worked at various mines in a range of commodities including gold, base metals, heavy mineral sands and coal. Her experience includes on-site management of environmental and sustainability issues, and corporate advisory and reporting roles in a large multi-national. Teresa’s focus is the integration of sustainability considerations into all aspects of mining throughout the lifecycle. Teresa has significant experience managing sustainability issues on large capital projects. She left Anglo American in 2014 to start Uvuna Sustainability.

CARMIN SWART

HEAD – CHANGE MANAGEMENT: THE ADJUSTMENT BUREAU

Carmin’s career within the entertainment and change management industries spans a period of thirteen years. Her career started within the entertainment industry, where she is an established actress, writer and facilitator. She is known for her film credits Met Kind, Pad na Jou Hart and Jou Romeo, which is due for release in December 2016. Her soap credits include Anneke from Roer jou Voete, Larissa on the etv soap Scandal, Sally Stander in Villa Rosa, Marla in Rhythm City, and Kaylee in Binnelanders.

Her passion to help people navigate through different facets of their professional and private lives has led to various productions, from dealing with personal relationships to retrenchments. In 2006, she was exposed to using a combination of performance arts and industrial psychology as a change mechanism in addressing situations within the workplace. She’s been involved in this field ever since and brings sustainable results within the specialised change management industries.

MICHAEL TIMBERLAKE

CHAIRMAN: NQA AFRICA

Michael Timberlake is qualified in Mechanical Engineering, Communication Skills, Production and Operations Management and Total Quality Management (TQM), and remains qualified until December 2019 for ISO/TS16949: 2009 with the International Automotive Task Force (IATF). Michael has worked directly in the aerospace, defence, aircraft and automotive manufacturing industries for 23 years in the UK and South Africa. He has been directly involved for the last 17 years with third- party certification (based in South Africa), initially with Underwriters Laboratories Inc., and currently with NQA Africa. For the past 11 years, Mr Michael Timberlake, through a licence agreement with NQA UK, has been responsible for the certification business in of NQA Africa sub-Saharan Africa. The certifications offered include ISO 9001, EMS 14001, OHSAS 18001 and ISO/TS 16949 (automotive sector specific), in the business sectors of agriculture, construction, civil engineering consulting, chemical, defence (in the South African navy), mining, mechanical, electrical and electronic manufacturing.

Michael has audited globally in the UK, France, Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Hungary, Italy, Turkey, South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, and Chile. Michael’s expertise includes risk assessment, continual operational improvement, quality/business assurance, root cause analysis (FMEA core tools), occupational health, safety management, operational and manufacturing excellence, and project management.

DR ARIEN VAN DER MERWE

FOUNDER: ARIANI HEALTH SOLUTIONS

Dr Arien is a medical doctor, specialising in workplace wellness, integrative medicine and stress management. She is an experienced public speaker, facilitator and trainer, and an internationally- published author of 22 books and training manuals on health and wellness. Her latest book is Managing Diabetes and Related Health Challenges (available in both Afrikaans and English).

She is registered by the Natural Healers Association (NHA) as Trainer and Ethno-Medicine Practitioner in the field of Traditional Health Care, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH – London) and Member of the International Stress Management Association (MISMA), UK branch. She has recently developed and registered 2 Accredited Courses: ‘An Integrative Approach to Managing Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome’ and ‘An Integrative Holistic Approach to Medicine’.

BERTUS VAN NIEKERK

COO: MATSEI TECHNOLOGIES AND CONSULTING

Currently, Bertus van Niekerk is the COO of an organisation with experience that centres on the design, provision and effective implementation of IT solutions into the public sector, as well as the aerospace and defence, utilities, telecommunications, transportation, financial resources and health sectors. Bertus is an industrial engineer, graduating from the University of Pretoria. Bertus worked for various organisations locally and internationally, providing specialist business information solution expertise for the aerospace and defence, mining and manufacturing sectors. He is filling key strategic and technical advisory roles to a major ERP vendor for industry specific aerospace and defence, and health business solutions.

RETHA ZEELIE

CEO: CST GOVERNANCE PTY LTD

Retha has 21 years’ experience as a governance specialist and is the CEO of CST Governance. She assists companies, boards, shareholders, directors and prescribed officers with corporate governance, estate planning, trust law, the King III Report and Code on Corporate Governance, and statutory compliance.

Since inception, Retha concentrated on impressing the risk of non-compliance on relevant laws, rules, codes and standards applying to clients, and guides them through various relevant practical issues arising in the market place.

In 2012, Retha successfully developed and launched a governance programme used in training directors and prescribed officers on principles related to the Companies Act and King III Report. This training programme is being developed into a web-based programme to assist individuals, companies and industries, which will soon be launched through a national higher education institution
